Yahboom MicroROS-Pi5 ROS2 Robot Car with Raspberry Pi 5 8GB, MS200 LiDAR & SLAM
The Yahboom MicroROS-Pi5 ROS2 Robot Car is a Raspberry Pi 5-based mobile robotics platform designed for learning and developing with ROS2 Humble, microROS, SLAM, computer vision and autonomous navigation. This OpenELAB configuration includes a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM, so the main computing platform is included and ready for software setup and robot development.
The robot combines a Raspberry Pi 5 upper-level computer with an ESP32-S3 MicroROS control board for real-time motor, sensor and actuator control. It integrates four 310 encoder motors, an MS200 TOF LiDAR, a 2MP camera on a 2DOF PTZ, a 6-axis IMU and a rechargeable 7.4V battery in an anodized aluminum-alloy chassis.
Raspberry Pi 5 + ESP32-S3 Dual-Controller Architecture
The MicroROS-Pi5 separates high-level computing from low-level robot control. The Raspberry Pi 5 8GB handles ROS2 applications, visual processing, mapping, navigation and higher-level decision making, while the ESP32-S3 MicroROS controller manages motors, encoders, servos, IMU, LiDAR communication and other real-time peripherals.
This architecture allows the robot to combine the computing capability of Raspberry Pi 5 with microROS-based embedded control. The control board supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and serial communication and provides a 5.1V/5A power solution for Raspberry Pi 5.
ROS2 Humble Development Platform
The robot uses Raspberry Pi OS with ROS2 Humble and supports Python 3 development. Yahboom's official learning materials cover the complete path from basic robot control to ROS2 modeling and simulation.
Available learning topics include robot state estimation, linear and angular velocity calibration, URDF robot models, TF2 coordinate transformation, RViz visualization and Gazebo simulation. This makes the platform suitable for students and developers who want to move from basic mobile robot control into a complete ROS2 workflow.
LiDAR SLAM, Mapping and Navigation
The included MS200 TOF LiDAR provides 360-degree environmental scanning for ROS2 mapping and navigation projects. It supports a measuring range of approximately 0.03 to 12 meters, a typical scan rate of 4500 points per second and 10Hz rotation.
With Yahboom's ROS2 examples, the robot can be used for LiDAR visualization, mapping, obstacle avoidance, following, patrol and autonomous navigation. The official course materials include Gmapping, Cartographer and Navigation2 workflows, allowing users to progress from LiDAR data acquisition to map building and navigation.
AI Vision with OpenCV and MediaPipe
A 2MP camera with 2DOF PTZ gives the robot a movable vision system for computer-vision experiments. Yahboom provides OpenCV and MediaPipe examples covering image processing, recognition and visual interaction.
Supported example projects include QR code and AR recognition, color and object tracking, face-related applications, gesture recognition, palm interaction and body-pose detection. Vision results can also be combined with robot movement and PTZ control to build interactive tracking and autonomous demonstration projects.
Multiple Robot Control Methods
The MicroROS-Pi5 can be operated through multiple control methods for different development stages. Users can start with direct manual control and later move into ROS2 autonomous applications.
- Mobile App: basic driving and supported mapping/navigation workflows.
- Wireless Controller: convenient manual robot and PTZ control.
- Computer Keyboard: ROS2-based keyboard control during development.
- Multi-Robot Projects: Yahboom provides examples for synchronized control and multi-machine navigation.
