RoboSense M1 Plus 200m Automotive-Grade MEMS Solid-State LiDAR

RoboSense M1 Plus is an automotive 2D MEMS solid-state LiDAR for forward perception, ADAS development and autonomous-driving research. It combines a 200 m maximum measurement range, 180 m ranging at 10% NIST reflectivity and up to 1,575,000 pts/s in dual-return mode. Its adaptive GAZE function increases vertical sampling density within a region of interest rather than applying the finest resolution across the entire field of view.

Built around 2D MEMS scanning, the RoboSense M1 Plus solid-state LiDAR is designed for forward perception in intelligent vehicles. Its long-range measurements support development teams working on obstacle detection, road-scene understanding and camera-LiDAR fusion. The available 12V and 24V configurations let integrators select the product and accessories for their vehicle platform.

Smart GAZE and Point Cloud Performance

Official RoboSense M1 Plus GAZE on and off point cloud comparison

Adaptive Resolution for the Region of Interest

GAZE concentrates vertical sampling within a region of interest, reaching 0.1-degree vertical resolution there. This denser sampling helps reveal distant obstacles. The comparison shows the difference between GAZE on and off, making the change in point-cloud detail easier to assess.

Point Clouds for Challenging Road Scenes

RoboSense demonstrates its point-cloud processing across different targets and scenes. These sequences offer a practical view of the sensor output for engineers evaluating obstacle shape and scene detail alongside headline range and resolution figures.

Automotive Development

The manufacturer describes AEC-Q100 qualification for its MEMS mirror module, built-in self-test and real-time monitoring. Its M1 Plus page also identifies IEC 60825-1 Class 1 eye safety. These are component and product design characteristics to consider during vehicle integration.

Using M1 Plus in a Perception Project

For ADAS and autonomous-driving research, front-facing depth data can help a perception stack separate nearby road geometry from more distant obstacles. Engineers can evaluate how target size, reflectivity and range affect the available point-cloud detail, then use those observations when developing object-detection and tracking algorithms.

In camera-LiDAR fusion, the LiDAR measurements provide spatial information to complement camera imagery. A useful evaluation workflow aligns timestamps and coordinate frames, checks calibration on known objects and compares the fused result over repeated driving sequences. This is a system-integration task for the host platform.

For mapping, localization and roadside perception experiments, plan sensor orientation and overlap around the area being observed. Record representative scenes so that filtering, segmentation and motion-estimation changes can be compared on the same data. The official PCAP and driver guides below support this development workflow.

Product Comparison

M1 Plus and M2 share RoboSense's M-platform approach and published housing dimensions. M2 is a close reference for teams evaluating longer reach and denser horizontal sampling; matching housing dimensions alone does not establish electrical, firmware or software interchangeability.

Connection and Documentation

The official download center lists M1 Plus Users Guide v1.3.0 EN, the M1 and M1 Plus brochure, and RSView for Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18/20. Downloads require the manufacturer's request form.

Match the 12V or 24V sensor, harness and interface equipment to the selected package. For software development, RoboSense's rs_driver handles packet decoding and its rslidar_sdk supplies ROS and ROS 2 integration. Their M1-family configuration must match the supplied sensor's packet format; use the model, network and timestamp settings documented for that unit.

Applications

Autonomous driving (L2+ to L4)

Forward 3D perception can support obstacle detection and scene understanding in autonomous-driving research. GAZE sampling can be evaluated within the region of interest; the complete vehicle must supply localization, planning and control.

Smart transportation systems

Fixed installations can supply geometric measurements for traffic-scene analysis. Assess occlusion, mounting orientation and the observation area before developing tracking or traffic-analysis software.

Urban mobility mapping and localization

Record repeatable routes for point-cloud registration, map comparison and localization experiments. Align sensor coordinates and timestamps with the motion and positioning information used by the host system.

ADAS and automotive perception modules

Use the 200 m maximum range and documented ROI scan pattern as planning inputs for camera-LiDAR fusion and object-detection development. Evaluate target reflectivity, point density and latency on the installed sensor.

Roadside sensing in smart city deployments

A forward-sector LiDAR can monitor a defined section of road or intersection. Coverage planning and multi-sensor overlap are important where road geometry or infrastructure obstructs the sensor view.

FAQ

What is the RoboSense M1 Plus used for?

M1 Plus is an automotive solid-state LiDAR for forward 3D perception. It can supply depth measurements to an ADAS or autonomous-driving development system.

What does the smart GAZE function do?

GAZE increases vertical sampling density within a region of interest, reaching 0.1-degree vertical resolution in that region. The official comparison above shows GAZE enabled and disabled.

Does 0.1-degree resolution apply to the whole field of view?

It refers to the vertical resolution in the GAZE region of interest. Keep this distinction when comparing sensors or evaluating small-object point clouds.

What does the published 200m range mean?

RoboSense lists a maximum range of 200m and 180m on a 10% reflectivity target. Detection distance varies with the target and measurement conditions.

Are the 12V and 24V options interchangeable?

Select the sensor and accessory kit for the intended voltage configuration. Use the electrical requirements of that exact version when choosing the power supply and harness.

Does the Accessory Kit option include a LiDAR?

The Accessory Kit is separate from the sensor-only option. Select LiDAR with Accessory Kit when you require the combined package; the original Packing List above details its contents.

Where are the English user guide and RSView software?

The official M1 Plus download center lists the English M1 Plus Users Guide v1.3.0, the M1 and M1 Plus brochure, and RSView packages for Windows and Ubuntu. Its downloads require the manufacturer's form.

Which official resources cover ROS and ROS 2 development?

RoboSense publishes rslidar_sdk for ROS and ROS 2, with rs_driver as its driver core. The repositories list M1 support; select the decoder and packet configuration applicable to your M1 Plus unit.

Can recorded point clouds be replayed during development?

The official driver documentation covers PCAP decoding and replay. This lets developers compare processing changes using a recorded sequence rather than repeating a live capture each time.

Does the LiDAR perform complete autonomous driving by itself?

It supplies sensing data to a larger system. Object interpretation, sensor fusion, localization, planning and vehicle control are functions of the surrounding software and vehicle platform.
